The Wedding Present

"if the world doesnt understand, then the world has got to learn"

Who?
The most succesful of the mid-80's NME attempt to build a scene, C-86 generation. From albumful of buzzsaw guitars and heartbroken songs, various line-up changes and flirtings with new styles may have altered the mix, but never the formula - a focus clearly on the songwriting talents and sexy legs of David Gedge.

Yes, anna, they were from
Leeds. But not the Goth-heavy part, obviously

Essential?
George Best, the first album, which contains the marvellous 'My Favourite Dress', and Seamonsters, the band's experiment in recording with Steve Albini, are absolute musts, but aside from a couple of bad choices during the Hit Parade project, pretty much everythig the band did will brighten your lives - you'll need Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now. Oh, and Brassneck.

In a nutshell, then:
Buzzsaw guitars and soap opera songs

Never mind the music, give us trivia:
Courtney Love once set about David Gedge for having had the temerity to work with Albini. The band share with Elvis the distinction of having had the most hits in one year - 12 - following a plan which saw them release a single every month for a year. Famously, the group refuse to play encores, which makes sense when you think about it. Amongst the covers the band have recorded are the themes from Twin peaks and Cheers, an Elton John song and Box Elder - back when you hadn't heard of Pavement. Or Blur. or snadwich toasters. Following a couple of Peel Sessions odities, the band developed a Ukrainain folk music offshoot, which eventually spun off into a separate band, The Ukranians.

In more depth:

"they’re facetious, but what else can you expect from Leeds?"
– yeah, Yorkshire’s so known for its sense of fun
