Juliana Hatfield

"I don't wanna be your cocaine slut"

Who?
One of those confusing, multi-project sort of people, who sticks out stuff at random and maddening intervals and has one of them is it a person, is it a band type deals. Blake Babies mainstay.

Essential?
Her first band the Blake Babies released an album on Billy Bragg's cheapo imprint Utility Records featuring the track you wish they'd played Billie, Cocaine Slut; Evening Session endorsed near-hit My Sister; 2000's double pack Julianas Pony thingy, which combined her twee kitten tickling with a fine dose of the sort of angry noise Courtney used to make before she got given her own valet.

In a nutshell, then:
Riot Grrrl before it was invented. And during. And after. Introspective self-hatred.

Never mind the music, give us trivia:
She once claimed to be a bisexual virgin, which was a lie. She recorded My Sister despite not having a sister. She went out for a while with Evan Dando when that meant something. And she played an angel in the Christmas episode of My So Called Life.
